New Royal Mail licensing is coming!

 1 March 2010

In a month's time, on the 1st April the Royal Mail is making the most drastic changes to its licensing arrangements in over 12 years.

One important change is that the concept of an "unlimited" licence is being severely restricted. The basis for the change is that it was felt that smaller users were unfairly subsidising the largest users who could licence perhaps hundreds of their staff with the relatively low cost unlimited licence. In the new scheme, individual licences will be reduced in cost but larger users must buy "blocks" of 300 licences.

Another change is that the "Pay As You Go" or "per-click" licensing is being extended to internal users, whereas it has previously only been available to websites serving the public. However, the cost per lookup has been set at a rather high level and will mostly benefit occasional users.

Technology for Marketing Exhibition

22 December 2009

We will again be exhibiting at the Technology for Marketing and Advertising Exhibition at Earls Court on the 23-23 February 2010.

We'll be showing our existing range of addressing and mapping products together with a brand-new and ultra-convenient method of generating addresses in Windows 7.

We will also be happy to discuss changes to pricing and implementation driven by the new Royal Mail licensing terms which come into force on 1st April 2010.

Free map references?

9 December 2009

The BBC News site is running a story at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8402327.stm  about the government's recent announcement that some of the Ordnance Survey data will be made free for public use.

The story includes the line: The dataset that is likely to be freed is that which ties postcodes to geographic locations.”  This would appear to be a reference to the map reference data supplied through the Royal Mail and sold by us to clients who need to know where addresses are physically located.

Consultation is still going on, but it is known that freed datasets will be available with effect from next April. If map reference data is available at no cost, then it is likely that Arc en Ciel will bundle it into their Address and Address+ products at no increased charge.

We'll keep you informed of all developments.
